As a busy mum juggling multiple responsibilities, finding time for yourself can feel like a luxury you can’t afford. But what if I told you that dedicating time to self-reflection could transform your life and help you become the parent and person you aspire to be? Enter: shadow work.
What is Shadow Work?
Shadow work involves exploring the hidden parts of yourself that influence your thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. These are often aspects of our personality that we have repressed or denied because they were deemed unacceptable or too painful to confront. According to estimates, only 5% of human brain activity is conscious. The remaining 95% takes place subconsciously and not only do we have no real control over it, but we are also not even aware that it is taking place. By bringing these unconscious aspects to light, you can heal past wounds, break unhealthy patterns, and unlock your true potential.
Why are you going to make time for Shadow Work?
Motherhood is amazing but its also really challenging . It can trigger so many unresolved issues from our own childhoods and push us to our limits. Shadow work offers a path to understanding these triggers and transforming them into sources of strength. By doing this work, you can create a calmer more fulfilling life for yourself and your family.
Shadow Work Journal Prompts
To help you get started, here are some shadow work journal prompts tailored to support you in your journey:
Self-Care Routine: Think of a time when you felt guilty for taking time for yourself. What beliefs or past experiences contribute to these feelings? How can you shift your mindset to see self-care as an essential part of your well-being and not an act of selfishness?
Mindfulness Practice: Reflect on a recent moment when you felt overwhelmed. What thoughts or fears were present? How can understanding and accepting these feelings help you stay present and build resilience in the face of anxiety?
Joyful Living: Recall a situation where you struggled to find joy. What internal barriers (such as stress or self-judgment) prevented you from enjoying the moment? How can you allow yourself to fully experience and appreciate your emotions and feel more happiness?
Personal Growth: Identify a trait or habit you feel needs improvement. What past experiences or influences have shaped this aspect of you? How can embracing and working through this part of yourself lead to you feeling more self-aware and intentional with your actions?
Cycle Breaking: Reflect on a parenting moment that triggered a strong emotional response. How does this connect to your own childhood experiences? What steps can you take to break these cycles and parent in a healthier, more compassionate way?
Work-Life Balance: Think about a time when you felt conflicted between work and home responsibilities. What fears or beliefs underlie this conflict? How can you create a balance that allows you to enjoy and progress in your career while being present at home?
Self-Belief: Consider a dream or goal you have been hesitant to pursue. What doubts or fears are holding you back? How can you believe in yourself more and what steps could you take to make your aspirations a reality?
